This is Debt Awareness Week and it’s a reminder of something we talk about all the time here: debt is normal, but struggling in silence doesn’t have to be.

We know that for many people, debt feels like something you must keep hidden, something to be ashamed of. But the truth is, life happens. Whether it's unexpected bills, losing a job, or just trying to get by when everything costs more than it used to, debt can creep in quietly and quickly. And if that's your reality right now, you're far from alone.

At Your Pay Your Way, we’ve worked with people from all walks of life who’ve found themselves stuck in a cycle of debt. Some are employed, some have been through the justice system, and some are just trying to figure out how to make ends meet. What they all have in common is the courage it takes to say, “I need help.” And that’s the first step.

This year’s Debt Awareness Week is all about breaking the stigma around debt and encouraging more open conversations. StepChange is focusing on the importance of getting advice early before things spiral. The earlier you act, the more options you have. That’s something we see every day in our sessions. When people get the right tools, guidance, and support, they not only regain control of their finances, they also start to believe in themselves.

Debt can feel overwhelming, but it doesn't have to be forever. We’re big believers in practical, no-nonsense support. That might mean budgeting tips that work for you, ideas for increasing income, or just having a safe space to talk through what’s going on.

So, if you’re struggling - or you know someone who is - this week is a good time to take a deep breath and reach out. Whether it’s to StepChange, to us, or to someone you trust.

Start the conversation.

Let’s keep breaking the stigma around debt. Let’s remind people that there is no shame in seeking help. And let’s keep building a future where everyone gets a fair shot at financial stability.

We’re here. No judgement. Just support.
